The Asakusa Kannon Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo, Japan. According to the legends of Asakusa, two brothers fished the statue of Kannon (goddess of mercy) from the river Sumida. They tried to put the statue back into the river but fortunately the statue always returned to them. So they planned to build a temple which started in 628 and finished its construction in 645.
The main entrance is the Kaminari-mon Gate, with a 3.3m high red paper lantern, weighing 100kg, with an inscription on it meaning “Thunder Gate. It was reconstructed in 1972 after long years since 1923 when the great earthquake destroyed the old gate building.
Passing it is the Nakamise, a shopping arcade of about 200m, lined with shops selling traditional (and not so traditional) souvenirs.
Worshipers wave smoke over their bodies to heal or prevent illness. People climb the steps to offer prayers to Kannon, Goddess of Mercy.
